The tasks a Jewellery Engraver is expected to perform include:
Engraving ornamental designs or letters on ornaments and jewellery using fine chisels and hand tools
Drawing in pencil required design to be engraved, on paper, if ornament is fairly big or else drawing design on ornament itself using fine steel point
Transferring design from paper to ornament by placing designed paper on surface of metal coated with wax solution and rubbing surface of paper to leave impression of design on waxed surface
Holding ornament in special device or fixing it in shellac
Marking outlines of design on ornament using steel point
Engraving design by stages using different type and sizes of chisels and hand tools changing position of article on table as required
Scooping out excess material from metals using special tools
Cutting the metal appropriately for setting and mounting stones
Making simple designs on plate for the goldsmith to work on, if required
Engraving or embossing using dyes and polishing ornaments for final finish
